This interactive workshop equips social workers with foundational skills in grant writing to support program development, research, and service delivery. Participants will learn how to identify funding opportunities, craft compelling narratives, and align proposals with funder priorities. The session emphasizes practical strategies for writing clear, persuasive, and strengths-based grant applications in nonprofit, clinical, and community-based settings.

 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  1. Identify key components of a typical grant proposal, including needs statements, objectives, methods, and evaluation plans;
  2. Apply techniques for writing concise, persuasive, and strengths-based narrative sections;
  3. Locate and assess potential funding sources relevant to their area of practice; and
  4. Understand common challenges in grant writing and how to address them using a structured, ethical approach.

Fr. Ragan Schriver, MSW, PsyD, the Director of the Master of Science in Social Work Program and Clinical Professor in the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee, teaches clinical as well as organizational management courses in the program as well as overseeing the operations and curriculum. He is an Episcopal priest serving as Vicar of St. Luke’s church in Knoxville. He serves on the Volunteer Ministry Center board and is the Vice President of the CAC board. Ragan was previously the executive director of Catholic Charities of East Tennessee. He also served as the Special Assistant to the President of Catholic Charities USA where he consulted agencies in their network on trauma informed and integrated health practices.
